Study hard, yet fail to see their marks reflect the effort that they have been putting in? Display behaviour issues and resist parenting attempts? Express their dislikes for school related activities, notably studying? Procrastinate and display poor planning which affects their performance? Get recommendations from teachers, school counsellors, or physicians? (Note: Referrals are not required to schedule an assessment) Frequently hear from teachers that they don’t pay attention in class?</image:caption>

When appropriate, she may also involve parents to allow them to participate in treatment planning and strategy implementation. <image:title>Dr. Lindsay Booker - Counselling for Parents</image:title>
<image:caption>Lindsay finds that when working with young children, the most effective approach is to teach the parents helpful strategies that they can apply with their child on a daily basis. Implementing these strategies at home, along with regular joint sessions with the parent and child can offer positive direction for both the parent and the child. Additionally, Lindsay may provide separate parent coaching sessions that focus on building a stronger parent-child relationship, improving communication, and working together to follow direction and encourage positive interaction.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Acceptance and Commitment Therapy: Lindsay specializes in acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT). She has over 5 years of training and experience using this approach to help her clients embrace their thoughts and feelings rather than avoiding or fighting the situation. Acceptance and commitment therapy develops psychological flexibility that encourages a person to commit to facing a problem head on rather that allow avoidance, guilt and stress to guide the process. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: Lindsay specializes in cognitive behavioural therapy and has over 15 years of training and experience in treating children, teens and adults with this approach. Cognitive behavioural therapy is a very dynamic approach that is effective in treating a variety of mental health conditions. It involves recognizing and challenging unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and feelings that trigger feelings of anxiety, depression, anger or stress.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anxiety around public presentations or performances is often referred to as stage fright. Although most people experience some degree of stage fright before going in front of a crowd, in some cases, the anxiety can be so severe that it may prevent the person from performing at all. Performance anxiety does not indicate a lack of skill, instead it is a fear of making a mistake that would make the individual feel judged or embarrassed. Symptoms of performance anxiety are: Sweating profusely, mostly on the forehead and hands. Nausea and stomach pains. Heart palpitations and heavy breathing. Shaking and pacing. Refusing to perform.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression - Depression in Men</image:title>
<image:caption>Although both men and women experience depression, their symptoms can vary drastically. Depression in women mostly manifests itself as sadness and self-deprecation, while in men, it appears as irritability, aggression and uncontrolled rage. Additionally, women are more likely to talk about and recognize depression, therefore more likely to seek treatment. Unfortunately, due to a lack of awareness regarding depression in men, the condition is often more life threatening. Even though, women are more likely to be diagnosed with depression, they have a significantly lower rate of suicide than men.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression - Depression in Teenagers</image:title>
<image:caption>Becoming a teenager introduces a host of new experiences including a changing body, peer pressure, increased academic expectations, new relationships and new schools. Additionally, the pressure from peers to conform on social media can harm their self-image. These changes can be a lot for a teenager to manage, and may sometimes lead to feelings of depression, loneliness, worthlessness, ineptitude and low self-esteem. Although many of the symptoms are the same, teenagers with depression display more behavioural changes than adults with the condition. Teenagers may become highly sensitive to criticism, experience angry outbursts, begin experimenting with substances, neglect personal hygiene, miss school or stop caring about academic performance, and, in some cases, begin self-harming behaviour. Therapy can help teenagers develop coping skills and strategies that can help them throughout their lifetime.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression - Postpartum Depression</image:title>
<image:caption>Postpartum depression is a serious depression that can start as early the first month after childbirth, and can sometimes develop into long-term chronic depression. Women with postpartum depression will often experience similar symptoms to major depression such as feeling sad, losing interest in things that previously brought joy (including the baby), feelings of fatigue, and experiencing weight changes. Unfortunately, PPD is often overlooked since being a new mother is hard, so exhaustion, stress, and irritability are common for sleep deprived mothers. In fact, new mothers often refuse to acknowledge that they are struggling due to social pressures to be a “good mother”. It is important for mothers to remember that their wellbeing is a priority and they should take the time to seek help to allow themselves to feel cared for and heard, as well as reminded that motherhood is hard and what they are experiencing is normal.</image:caption>

<image:title>Depression - How Can Therapy Help?</image:title>
<image:caption>Depression can be treated very effectively with a combination of medication and therapy. Therapy can help you learn more about yourself while reflecting and learning new tools to cope and feel better. Specifically, cognitive behavioural therapy has been shown to be especially effective in reducing feelings of depression by helping an individual recognize and challenge unhelpful thoughts, beliefs and feelings.</image:caption>

<image:title>Child Counselling - Mental Health Issues in Boys vs Girls</image:title>
<image:caption>Boys and girls often present different signs and symptoms of mental health issues, which is why it is important for parents, teachers and counsellors to be aware of those differences. Conditions such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), anxiety and even depression appear differently in boys as opposed to girls. Research has shown that boys are more likely to show externalized symptoms such as impulsivity, physical aggression, emotional outbursts, self-harm, anger, and hyperactivity. Girls, on the other hand, are usually more aware of social expectations and tend to mask and internalize their symptoms so as to not be noticed. Therefore, signs of mental health issues in girls often present as social withdrawal, anxiety, eating disorders, verbal aggression, and poor academic performance. As a result of these differences, mental health issues are discovered in boys at a much higher rate than girls.</image:caption>

<image:title>Child Counselling - Academics and School Consultations</image:title>
<image:caption>Feeling understood, empowered and supported in school is essential for the mental health and wellbeing of a child. Aside from providing psycho-educational and gifted assessments for children, we also partner with schools, educators and support staff to ensure that they have all the necessary information and guidance needed to effectively encourage your child’s strengths while compassionately working with them to overcome difficulties. We work with teachers, school counsellors and other support staff to develop positive behaviour support plans at school, initiate school meetings to share assessment results with teachers and administration, and conduct school observations to gather information to support teachers with behaviour support plans as well as collecting further observational data for assessments.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teen Counselling - Bullying and Cyberbullying</image:title>
<image:caption>Bullying is repeated harassment and aggressive behaviour towards a targeted person. Oftentimes, the bullies are relentless and the abuse escalates over time as the bully grows emboldened. The bullying can be physical, verbal, or relational, and it often deeply impacts the victim. Bullying can leave a person feeling helpless, humiliated, anxious, depressed, threatened and lonely. Technology means that bullying is no longer limited to just schools and street run ins. Cyberbullying can happen anywhere and anytime, exposing the child to relentless torment in all hours of the day with no escape. Furthermore, it is often done anonymously and in front of hundreds of people, thereby causing the child to feel paranoid and threatened wherever they go. If your teenager is being bullied, the mental health consequences can be severe and even life threatening. It is important to speak to your child, and if necessary, have them speak to a psychologist in order to cope and manage with abuse.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teen Counselling - LGBTQIA+ Individuals</image:title>
<image:caption>The teenage years are meant for self discovery. It is the time when teenagers start defining who they are and where they fit in the world, which makes it especially difficult when the world does not accept who they are. Although acceptance has improved over the years, many LGBTQIA+ teenagers and adults still face judgement, discrimination, loss of relationships and bullying. Mental Health Therapy can help individuals with: Self acceptance Coming out Transitioning Gender dysphoria Coping with judgement and discrimination Relationships Parent-child conflict Healing from conversion therapy</image:caption>

<image:title>Parent Training - How Can Parent Training Help Children?</image:title>
<image:caption>Children want to be “good”, but sometimes they just don’t know how. Their home life may lack a parental presence, structure, or discipline which prevents them from reaching appropriate behavioural, emotional or social milestones. Children with behavioural, emotional, or self-regulation issues don’t simply grow out of it. Untreated childhood behavioural disorders often develop into long term academic, social, emotional, vocational, and interpersonal difficulties that last into adolescence and adulthood. Therefore, it is essential to get help when they are young. Parent training is one of the most effective treatments available to improve behavioural issues, poor emotional regulation, academic struggles, as well as disruptive behaviour in children, especially for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Parent training can help the parents as much as it helps the children. Learning about a variety of effective parenting strategies helps reduce the amount of stressors surrounding the parents. By applying these techniques at home, parents successfully improve parent-child relationships, lower household tension, and allows for more stability in the family. In turn, the healthier home life has a positive effect on the parent’s mental health and wellbeing, as well as that of the child.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Feeling understood, empowered and supported in school is essential for the mental health and wellbeing of a child. Aside from providing psycho-educational and gifted assessments for children, we also partner with schools, educators and support staff to ensure that they have all the necessary information and guidance needed to effectively encourage your child’s strength while compassionately working with them to overcome difficulties. We work with teachers, school counsellors and other support staff to develop positive behaviour support plans at school, initiate school meetings to share assessment results with teachers and administration, and conduct school observations to gather information aimed at supporting teachers with behaviour support plans, as well as to collect further observational data for assessments.</image:caption>

<image:title>Obsessions & Compulsions - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) in Children</image:title>
<image:caption>As with adults, children may experience unexplained, intrusive thoughts that can make them feel very upset and engage in behaviours that may not make any sense to parents or teachers. Because children can’t easily articulate their thoughts and reasoning behind the compulsions, they may become very upset when their ritual is disrupted. In some cases, compulsions can occur without any specific thought. For example, a child may become distressed if a page in their notebook was not pulled out perfectly. In other cases, obsessive thoughts and worries control the behaviours of the child, even when they try hard to ignore them. For example, they may desperately want to play with other children, but their fear of germs keeps them away. If your child is displaying signs of OCD that interfere with their lives, counselling can help.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Natashya has a fun and relaxed approach when working with children and teens but still utilizes evidence-based treatments to promote adaptive coping skills. <image:title>Trauma - Trauma in Children</image:title>
<image:caption>Experiencing a traumatic event as a young child under 12 can have a significant impact on the child's development and emotional wellbeing if it isn't properly addressed. Young children may re-enact the traumatic event through play, experience frightening nightmares, or appear depressed. They may also act out their frustration, anger, and anxiety in other ways such as tantrums or violence. Trauma counselling is important because it helps children process the traumatic event and come to terms with it in a safe environment. The counsellor will teach the child coping skills and help them explore their feelings about what happened so that they can begin to heal and move on with their lives.</image:caption>

<image:title>Trauma - EMDR for Trauma</image:title>
<image:caption>One of the most effective forms of treatment for trauma is eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy, also known as EMDR therapy. This relatively new kind of therapy helps people with past traumas resolve their symptoms by stimulating different parts of the brain to help it process traumatic events. The goal of EMDR therapy is to help the client reprocess their traumatic memories so they can move forward with their lives. It does this by using eye movements to stimulate different parts of your brain as you think about your past trauma. These eye movements numb the overwhelming feelings that usually come with recalling traumatic memories. It also helps your brain develop new connections between these memories and other information stored in its long-term memory bank so that they no longer cause fear or anxiety when you think about them.</image:caption>

<image:title>Trauma - Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for Trauma</image:title>
<image:caption>Accelerated resolution therapy (ART) is a treatment that was developed in the wake of EMDR, and it's not surprising that they share some similarities. ART, like EMDR, uses eye movements to help patients process their experiences. The main difference between the two is that while EMDR focuses on memories, ART focuses on emotions and images. Additionally, ART uses a specific number of eye movements, where as EMDR is more flexible. In some cases, one of these approaches works better for a patient than the other. Therapists evaluate which approach would be better based on the unique needs of the individual.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sports Therapy - What Is Sports Psychology?</image:title>
<image:caption>Sports psychologists use a combination of scientific methods and psychological theory to help athletes achieve their goals. By observing and interacting with athletes, they get a better understanding of the challenges they face during competition and how those challenges affect their performance and that of the team. They then use these observations to develop individualized plans that help athletes achieve their goals, improve their performance under pressure, combat doubt, and reduce performance anxiety.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sports Therapy - Team Building</image:title>
<image:caption>Team building is a crucial part of the development process for any athletic team. By understanding the needs of the team, sports psychologists can help the coaches and athletes understand what is needed to improve performance. This could include helping them learn how to work better with each other, how to communicate more effectively, or how to manage their emotions when they are under pressure. Team building will help your team become more cohesive and efficient as a group, which will make it easier for them to perform better as individuals. It can also help them develop new skills that will benefit them outside of sport.</image:caption>

<image:title>Sports Therapy - Rehabilitation After Injury</image:title>
<image:caption>Another important focus of sports psychology is on helping athletes recover and return to their sport after an injury. When an athlete suffers a sports injury, they may experience emotional reactions in addition to physical injury, which can include feelings of anger, frustration, hopelessness, and fear. Sports psychologists work with these athletes to help them mentally cope with the recovery process and to restore their confidence once they are ready to return to their sport. The psychologist will also help the athlete develop techniques for preventing injuries in the future by analyzing potential causes for previous injuries and working with the athlete on changing habits that may have contributed to them.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dr. Colburne works collaboratively with parents on common issues encountered with young children such as picky eating, sleep difficulties, toileting issues, tantrums, emotional regulation, and anxiety. Challenges such as tantrums are part of the normal developmental process given a child's age and stage. We can work together on how to best move through these stages by cultivating an environment that will help your child thrive. Some parents may not have a specific area of need, but choose to seek some professional input which can help develop confidence in their intuition as they commence their parenting journey.</image:caption>

<image:title>Learning Disabilities - Psycho-educational Assessment for Learning Disabilities</image:title>
<image:caption>Our team takes a comprehensive, individualized approach to assessing learning disabilities. We start with a thorough interview to understand the full context of difficulties and strengths. Next, we conduct formal psychoeducational testing to identify areas of weakness and pinpoint the presence of a learning disability. Testing assesses skills like reading decoding, reading comprehension, math calculation, math reasoning, writing, and information processing speed. Once testing is complete, we analyze results to determine if criteria are met for a diagnosis.</image:caption>
